- Wouldn't it be simple (if you want a nice looking gui) just to make a new
- GadTools library that improved on the look of all the gadgets? That way the
- look of all the old GadTools based programs would be improved instantly
- without a fuss over all this MUI stuff.
-
- Then if a preferences program was made to configure the look of the new
- GadTools gadgets users could still have the control over the look without
- having sacrifice memory and hard disk space.
-
- Wouldn't it be nice if AT scrapped that ugly topaz font altogether and went
- for a nice non-proportional font for all the menus and text on the screen that
- didn't need to be proportional -- I know that you can configure the workbench
- settings but wouldn't it be nice if ALL the programs had a nice skinny little
- font whether they were on the workbench or on their own little screen.
-
- Also how about a nice 3 color gadtools button, or if you have lots of memory,
- a beautiful 16 color raytraced one that had 6 or 7 frames of animation when it
- was being pushed down! Buttons look much more professional if the edges are
- shades of grey with beveled corners instead of straight black and white. Ones
- like the ones on lightwave would be nice -- i kinda like that color
- scheme...if only the font was nicer. (like the one for lightwave on Windows).
- And how about some nice background workbench patterns AND most importantly way
- better palette mapping. How it disturbs me when I'm using my web browser to
- look at an inlined picture and instead of a nice purple I get a bunch of white
- dots!!?? There is no excuse for that. The Macintosh's palette mapping is
- virtually unnoticable even with only 256 colors.
-
- And of course lets get away from these crappy 4 color icons that could easily
- be displayed on a commodore 64. Both Windows and Mac have full color icons,
- where as Amiga OS has only black, white, and a yucky shade of blue?? Talk
- about a spirit of opression whenever I turn on my amiga to do some serious
- work. Of course you can get new icon sets, but still, they're only 8 colors
- with nice but still rather opressive icons.
-
- And what about pull down menus? It would be much nicer to have cool pop up
- menus with nice beveled edges and thin non-proportional text than ugly black
- and white ones that haven't changed much since Workbench 1.0.
-
- Sure there are many pd programs that will fix some of my complaints, but what
- about the first time amiga user? Many users (trust me i know many) do not have
- any idea about what they can make their amiga do....and have no access to the
- many pd and shareware libraries that us veteran amiga users do. All they have
- to do is look at a screenshot of Windows 95 and then take a look at their
- crappy 640x256 4 color workbench and decide that Windows 95 is the thing to
- buy.
-
- These are all minor concerns that would take little programming on the
- operating system to include, but would certainly make the Amiga Operating
- System more appealing.
-
- I can envision a good 32 color (at minimum) 640x480 workbench with full 32
- color icons and the perfect match of color schemes for everything from the
- buttons to popup menus to icons. And then the rest of the colors (from 32 to
- 256 or 262144) can be used for extensive palette mapping for applications
- such as web browsers, picture viewers, and the backdrop image. Of course all
- these wonderful enhancements would demand more on the resources, but you can't
- buy a PC nowadays without 8 megs of ram and a 400 mb hard drive minimum. We
- can't expect less from an Amiga.
-
- Okay i have gotten a little off topic about my main point about a new
- GadTools library, but there is my rather lengthy wish list for the Amiga's
- interface. AT had better have a really good OS revamp for these new power
- amigas they say they're going to put out.
